Freehills has hired Competition and Antitrust partner Daniel Preston just months after promoting Patrick Gay to the partnership, confirming Freehills’ move toward the standout Competition practice in the country.
Freehills CEO Gavin Bell said the firm had identified competition and market regulation as offering substantial opportunity for the firm given some of the high profile M&A deals that continue to face considerable scrutiny from the ACCC.
“Increasingly, a commercial law firm’s competition law offering is a strategically important way for it to secure transactions and other business for the firm generally. At the same time, competition law continues to become more complex and there is a high demand for partners with deep experience in the area,” Bell said.
Freehills’ strong Competition and Market Regulation team is regularly ranked as a leading practice by industry publications.
Daniel Preston’s appointment will further strengthen the group, as he too is highly regarded in the market, and has been named a Leading Lawyer in the Competition and Antitrust area in Chambers Global since 1997.
Daniel, who was most recently a partner at Blake Dawson, has extensive experience dealing with all aspects of competition and consumer protection law, including expertise in working on multi-jurisdictional competition issues.
Daniel said he was looking forward to working with such a high calibre team, and working towards entrenching the team’s reputation as the premier Competition and Antitrust practice in Australia.
“Competition and Market Regulation is increasingly critical to Australian businesses and the economy,’ he said. ‘Freehills clearly recognises its importance and sees the opportunity to further develop the firm’s offering to clients,” Preston said.
Freehills’ CMR team includes Paul Hughes, Chris Jose, Peter McDonald, Patrick Gay, Daniel Preston, Bob Baxt, Karen Gibbons, and Michael Gray.
