Ashurst Boosts Hong Kong Finance Team with Derivatives Specialist

Ashurst announces the addition of partner Chris Whiteley to its international finance team in Hong Kong.

Chris, who has been a partner in Ashurst’s London office since 2006, is a derivatives specialist, with particular expertise in OTC derivatives.  He has extensive experience of advising in relation to traditional hedging and trading activities and complex transactions, together with related credit support arrangements, clearing and other credit risk mitigants.

The arrival of Chris Whiteley is a further boost to Ashurst’s offering to financial institutional clients in Hong Kong and the wider Asia region.  It follows the recent hire of Gareth Hughes, an experienced litigation partner specialising in financial services disputes and contentious financial regulatory matters.

Geoffrey Green, Ashurst Head of Asia, commented:

“Our aim since launching in Hong Kong has been to build a premium quality practice by focusing on specialised areas where we can really add value for our clients.  Chris comes to Hong Kong from a team which has, in recent years, developed a stellar reputation as a market leader in derivatives in Europe and I am sure he will play a key role in replicating that success in Asia.  Chris knows the Hong Kong market well, having previously spent a number of years here, and we are delighted to welcome him back.”

Chris Whiteley commented:

“Derivatives is an area that offers significant opportunities for us in Asia.  Relatively few law firms in Hong Kong currently offer dedicated derivatives expertise, despite the fact that it is a major part of investment banking activity.  Since derivatives are an important part of many finance transactions, the ability to provide specialist advice is also key to providing banks with a comprehensive service.”
