Holland & Knight Expands Abu Dhabi Office

Holland & Knight is pleased to announce that Marc Sukkar has joined the law firm as a partner in its Abu Dhabi office. Also returning to the firm as an associate in Abu Dhabi is Nijoe Joseph. Their addition to this well established office further strengthens the firm’s position in the Gulf region.

“The addition of Marc and Nijoe to our Abu Dhabi team will significantly expand the range of services we offer our U.A.E. clients and our international clients with interests in the region,” said Andrew Stephenson, executive partner of the Abu Dhabi office. “Both are outstanding lawyers, with extensive experience in the Middle East, and will be instrumental to the continuing growth of the office.”

Mr. Sukkar’s practice focuses on construction law, energy and dispute resolution. Most recently, he was senior counsel for Msheireb Properties, a subsidiary of Qatar Foundation. As senior counsel, he advised the chief executive officer, engineer and general counsel on all projects and developments including procurement and tendering, preparation and negotiating of contracts, resolution of claims and disputes, application of FIDIC suite, Qatar law and other policies. Most prominent among these developments was Msheireb Downtown Doha, a US$7 billion megaproject with a proposed underground metro. Previously, he was senior legal advisor with Salam International Investment Ltd., also in Doha, where he provided legal counsel to 38 companies within the Salam conglomerate.

Mr. Joseph advises international and local companies and family business houses on corporate, commercial, trade and transportation (aviation and maritime) laws in the United Arab Emirates, GCC and India. Most of his work for clients has focused on aviation and vessel financings, commercial agencies and franchises, logistics and distribution, banking, construction, infrastructure and urban transportation-related transactions, and U.A.E. immigration and labor law issues. He has extensive government experience from working as the legal advisor and regulations specialist with the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport (Maritime Sector).

“Holland & Knight’s construction and real estate practice is respected and widely recognized as one of the best in the legal profession,” said Mr. Sukkar. “I am both honored and look forward to working with my new colleagues with a view to expanding its presence and influence in the Gulf region.”

“I am delighted to be returning to Holland & Knight,” said Mr. Joseph. “The wide range of services offered by the Abu Dhabi office in energy, construction, transportation, finance, international arbitration and other areas of the law will be of great benefit to my clients.”

Holland & Knight’s Abu Dhabi office opened in 2008. In addition to Messrs. Sukkar, Joseph and Stephenson, the firm’s Abu Dhabi attorneys include partners Michael Cavanaugh, Wayne Gray, George Howell and Joseph McDonough, Senior Counsel Mehrnoosh Aryanpour, and associates Farid Hekmat, Tania Jarjur and Mohammad Sheikh.
