McDermott Boosts Chinese Competition Law Capability and Global Antitrust Footprint

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP, a recognized leader in antitrust and competition law, today announced that Brussels partner Frank Schoneveld has relocated to MWE China Law Offices in Shanghai as part of a coordinated global effort to enhance the firms’ joint competition capabilities. With over 20 years’ experience in European Union (EU) competition law and regulatory matters, Schoneveld will bring valuable hands-on antitrust experience in advising multinational companies facing new legal challenges under China’s new Anti-Monopoly Law (AML).

McDermott’s Chinese antitrust service offering is unique in that it is the only international law firm composed of Chinese competition law specialists who are Chinese-qualified and licensed, permitting them to appear before the Chinese competition law enforcement agencies and in Chinese courts on behalf of McDermott’s clients. Schoneveld’s relocation to Shanghai will complement this unique capability. McDermott is part of a strategic alliance with Shanghai-based People’s Republic of China (PRC) firm MWE China Law Offices, which allows both firms to function as an integrated firm in essentially all respects of service delivery while offering clients the benefit of full legal representation on both sides of the Pacific and in Europe.

“Frank’s move to Shanghai, coupled with our recent strategic lateral hires in Brussels, the U.S. and Paris, further solidifies McDermott’s position as one of the world’s leading international antitrust law firms,” said Joseph F. Winterscheid, partner and head of McDermott’s global Antitrust/Competition Practice Group in Washington, D.C. “Our team has not only added considerable depth in the U.S., Europe and China, but we are now positioned to provide comprehensive antitrust advice to our clients across each of these key regions on a seamless basis, a capability which is critical in an increasingly global enforcement environment in virtually all areas of antitrust, ranging from international cartel enforcement to international merger control.”

Schoneveld’s relocation to Shanghai caps a decidedly active year for McDermott’s global antitrust practice, having added German-qualified Martina Maier and Philipp Werner and Dutch-qualified Wilko van Weert to its team in Brussels, adding former U.S. Department of Justice official Alison Smith to its Houston office in the U.S., and, most recently, bringing EU competition law and cross-border M&A specialist Jacques Buhart on board to head McDermott’s new office in Paris.

“We are honored to welcome Frank as the newest member of our team“ said John Huang, partner-in-charge of MWE China Law. “Frank’s deep experience in the application of competition law principles to a wide range of industries under EU competition law, upon which the new Chinese AML is largely patterned, will be a tremendous asset to our office as we continue to see growing demand in the Chinese market for these types of legal services and counsel.”

Schoneveld has previously served as a consultant to DG Competition of the EU Commission in advising the Chinese government on developing the AML. He has worked closely with the MWE China Law Offices competition law team on numerous AML matters following its enactment, both from Brussels and on location in Shanghai. Prior to joining McDermott, Schoneveld served as European Counsel for the Australian Government based in Brussels, and later as Head of the General Commercial Law Division of the UN Works Agency based in the Middle East.
