Shearman & Sterling Recruits Capital Markets Partner in Hong Kong

Shearman & Sterling announced that Shuang Zhao will join the firm as a partner in the Hong Kong office. The move brings new partner appointments in Hong Kong to three since the beginning of the year and further bolsters the firm’s capabilities in Greater China.

Ms. Zhao joins the firm from the Hong Kong office of Simpson Thacher. New York-qualified, Ms. Zhao focuses on securities offerings and M&A transactions and has extensive experience representing Chinese issuers and leading investment banks in NYSE and NASDAQ IPOs, Hong Kong IPOs and Rule 144A and Regulation S offerings of equity, debt and convertible securities. She has advised clients in a broad range of industries, in particular in the renewable energy, education, retail and healthcare sectors.

At Shearman & Sterling, Ms. Zhao joins a highly regarded Greater China corporate team, led by Matthew Bersani, Asia Managing Partner, Lee Edwards, head of the firm’s China Practice, and Colin Law, leading the firm’s Hong Kong law practice. Other partners include capital markets practitioners Kyungwon Lee and Alan Seem, M&A practitioners Greg Puff, Huang Ling and Paul Strecker and Peter Chen, who joined the partnership earlier this year with Colin Law to spearhead the firm’s Hong Kong law practice.

Rohan S. Weerasinghe, Senior Partner of Shearman & Sterling, said, “The addition of Shuang demonstrates our commitment to solidifying our position as the leading international law firm in China. We will continue to expand our practice throughout the region to ensure that we are the firm of choice for Asian-based companies and international companies with significant interest and operations in Asia.”

“We are delighted to welcome Shuang to our team. Her addition will help us meet the increasing client demand for our expanded one-stop US and Hong Kong law capital markets practice. Her strong corporate-side practice will complement our existing practice perfectly,” added Bersani.

The firm’s practice in Asia spans a wide range of transactions, including cross-border joint ventures, outbound investments in U.S. and European corporations, foreign direct investments, public and private acquisitions and divestitures, initial public offerings, private placements of securities, debt and equity derivative securities, high-yield debt offerings, equity and debt shelf offerings, and ADR and GDR programs. Most recently, the firm represented Qatar Holding LLC in connection with its US$2.8 billion cornerstone investment in Agricultural Bank of China Limited (ABC), a key component in what is the world’s largest-ever IPO. The firm also advised on Vincom’s bond offering—Vietnam’s first overseas sale of convertible bonds and the first international capital raising from any Vietnamese issuer since 2005; and the underwriters on the US$2.35 billion IPO of Metallurgical Corporation of China—one of the largest Hong Kong IPOs of 2009.
