Sidley Austin LLP announced the expansion of the firm’s Investment Funds practice in Singapore with the addition of four new lawyers, including Josephine Law, who will serve as counsel, senior associate, Joel Seow and associate Reina Chua. These new lawyers worked previously with new Sidley partner Han Ming Ho, a prominent investment funds lawyer now resident in Sidley’s Singapore office and co-head of the firm’s Asia Investment Funds practice.
“We are very excited to welcome our new team to Sidley,” said Effie Vasilopoulos, partner in Sidley’s Hong Kong office and co-head of the firm’s Investment Funds practice in Asia. “They have deep roots in Singapore and an astute knowledge of its changing regulatory landscape, both of which are tremendous assets. Adding this team of talented lawyers gives us the ability to offer clients advice in Singapore law and English law, which complements nicely our existing U.S. and Hong Kong law capabilities and further strengthens Sidley’s position as a leading one-stop-shop for all funds-related matters in Asia.”
Mr. Ho is recognized as one of Asia’s leading international funds lawyers, with extensive experience counseling clients on the structuring and formation of a broad range of investment funds, including hedge funds, private equity funds, real estate funds and exchange traded funds. A well-known authority in the Singapore funds market, Mr. Ho is ranked as a Band One leading lawyer by Chambers Asia Pacific and is the current chair of the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA) in Singapore.
This new team, led by Mr. Ho, brings notable experience and valuable skills to Sidley. Ms. Law has significant experience establishing domestic funds and registering both domestic and offshore funds for retail distribution as well as advising on regulatory and compliance matters. Mr. Seow focuses his practice on private equity funds, real estate funds, infrastructure funds and hedge funds. Ms. Chua’s experience includes advising clients on regulatory compliance matters and on the marketing of funds in Singapore.
“Han Ming and his team are joining Sidley at an exciting time, as the interplay between the Singapore and Hong Kong markets continues to shape the funds industry in this region,” said Thomas Albrecht, managing partner, Asia Pacific. “The ability to advise on the formation and operation of all types of alternative and traditional investment vehicles, as well as on regulatory and compliance issues is essential. We take pride in being able to offer a full scope of services to funds clients across all stages of development.”
“We were attracted to Sidley in large part because of its premier global funds practice,” said Mr. Ho. “Sidley has the reputation of having one of the top funds groups in Asia, including Southeast Asia. There is an inherent synergy between Sidley’s existing group of funds lawyers and our team, and we are very excited to be joining the firm. We expect it to be a smooth transition and look forward to working with our new colleagues to provide clients with the highest level of service.”
