South Korea has always enjoyed a prosperous relationship with western countries. Recent regulatory changes will allow international firms to open offices in major Korean cities such as Seoul. This trend should continue as the government approves new heads of office for three law firms in the country.
In 2011, the South Korean government lifted a ban on international law firms that had prevented them from expanding into the nation. Since then, numerous international firms have applied for admittance into the country. Recently, three lawyers from these prominent firms were approved on an individual basis by federal officials.
Law.com reported Ropes & Gray Korea practice chair William Yongkyun Kim, Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton finance partner Seth (Byoung Soo) Kim, and Clifford Chance finance counsel Brian Cassidy have all been cleared to practice in South Korea by the Ministry of Justice.
“Assuming that’s all done,” Kim said, “the foreign legal consultant will take documents from the Korean bar, go back to ministry, and sponsor the law firm [for registration].”
As more law firms are approved to open practices, they will likely be looking for legal recruitment. Kinney’s attorney headhunters will be able to provide access to South Korean market.
