International law firm Hogan Lovells has acted as counsel to Professor Luc Montagnier, a French virologist who received the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), on his appointment by Shanghai Jiaotong University as its faculty professor and director of a new research institute.
The Hogan Lovells team was led by Shanghai office managing partner Andrew McGinty, who was assisted by associate Sébastien Jetté.
The appointment agreement, signed on 18 November, marks the first time a Nobel laureate has become a full-time faculty member on the Chinese mainland. Under the agreement, Professor Montagnier will work with the university to establish the Montagnier Biomedical Research Institute, which will focus on studies of the HIV/AIDS and other viral diseases.
Speaking on the day of the appointment ceremony, Andrew McGinty said:
“We are delighted to have been involved in Professor Montagnier’s appointment to Shanghai Jiaotong University as a faculty professor and in the establishment of the Montagnier Biomedical Research Institute. As can be seen from the Chinese press coverage, these are high profile and significant developments for both the education and life sciences sectors in China, sectors in which Hogan Lovells in China is regarded as having particular strengths. More importantly, we are also particularly pleased to have had the opportunity to help negotiate the terms of an agreement which will facilitate research in an area of major global significance.”
