Niping Wu to Join Debevoise and Lead Shanghai Practice

Debevoise & Plimpton LLP today announced the appointment of Niping Wu to the role of International Counsel in the firm’s Shanghai office. Her appointment reflects the firm’s continued commitment to the development of its business in Asia. Ms. Wu’s arrival coincides with recognition of Debevoise by Finance Asia for the firm’s role as counsel to American International Group (AIG) and AIA Group in connection with AIA’s initial public offering. The transaction is the largest IPO in Hong Kong’s history and the world’s largest IPO in the insurance sector.

Distinguished as a leading private equity lawyer by Chambers Asia, Ms. Wu brings to Debevoise extensive experience in cross-border M&A, in particular private equity downstream investment in the Asia-Pacific region and strategic investments in relation to Chinese target companies, as well as in representing multinational companies in their direct investments in China. She has also represented clients in capital markets transactions including U.S. public and institutional offerings by Chinese and other non-U.S. issuers. Additionally, she has worked on cross-border financing transactions for clients in Asia, the U.S. and Latin America. Ms. Wu was most recently a partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP based in Beijing and was with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP for over a decade based variously in New York, Hong Kong and Beijing. She received her B.S. summa cum laude from Yale University and her J.D. from Yale Law School.

Ms. Wu will play a leadership role in transactional matters in Shanghai, with an emphasis on acting for private equity firms, for Asian companies and international parties interested in investing in the region. Together with the recent move of partner Edward Drew Dutton and several associates to the Hong Kong office, Ms. Wu’s arrival underscores the firm’s commitment to the Asia region and gives Debevoise added capabilities and an expanded presence to support its clients. Ms. Wu is fluent in Mandarin and Shanghainese.

“We are thrilled to have a lawyer of Niping’s stature and experience join Debevoise to play a key role in the continued growth of our practice in Asia. She brings particular strength and knowledge regarding the Chinese private equity market, and has the practice background and skills we need to serve the region,” said Martin Frederic Roberts, Presiding Partner of Debevoise. “Niping joins Debevoise at an exciting time in the evolution of our top ranked global insurance and private equity practices. We look forward to working with Niping as she and our Asia team further build our capacity to provide service to our clients doing business in Asia.”
