Locke Lord Grows Hong Kong Office and Strengthens International Arbitration Practice Group With Addition of Partner Ronald Sum and Team

Ronald Sum has joined Locke Lord’s Hong Kong office as a Partner in the Firm’s International Arbitration Practice Group. He will be the Firm’s Head of Arbitration, East Asia. Sum and his team, including Of Counsel Daniel Lee and Trainee Solicitor Beryl Wu, will help grow and strengthen the Firm’s Hong Kong office and International Arbitration Practice.

Sum is a fellow member of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong Arbitration and ADR Sub-Committee. He is on the panel of arbitrators of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) and has acted as arbitrator in HKIAC administered arbitration proceedings. He is also on the Panel of Arbitrators of the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration. In March, Sum was appointed to a new three-year term of the Advisory Committee on Promotion of Arbitration, which advises and assists the Department of Justice with respect to the promotion of arbitration in Hong Kong.

Sum concentrates his practice in all areas of dispute resolution and non-contentious matters, with an emphasis on China-related matters, cross-border disputes, transportation, international trade, insurance and reinsurance, product liability and product recall, including arbitration, litigation, mediation and investigations. Lee has been practicing shipping and commercial law for more than 15 years, with a focus on litigation and arbitration. Wu will complete her trainee program with Locke Lord in August, following which she will become an Associate with the Firm. She grew up in China’s Guangdong province and attended school there.

Sum, who joins the Firm from Troutman Sanders in Hong Kong where he was a Partner, has considerable experience in dispute resolution, including complex commercial litigation, export credit insurance and letters of credit disputes, shareholders and charter party disputes, defending and pursuing cargo claims, acting for and against logistics companies and liability insurers in various types of claims regarding policy liability, representing ship owners and P&I Clubs in collision cases and representing banks and trading companies and ship owners in various forms of trading disputes involving cross-border jurisdictions. His experience in non-contentious matters includes drafting and commenting on insurance policies for non-marine related products, acting for banks in commenting on export credit insurance and letters of credit, ship sales and purchases, ship finance and preparing commercial tenancy agreements.

Sum was recognized as one of the Recommended Lawyers in Dispute Resolution (Hong Kong) by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific in 2016. He is a frequent writer and presenter on specific topics in arbitration, cross-border dispute resolution, transportation, logistics, insurance, letters of credit and general strategies in litigation, arbitration and mediation. He is also an accredited mediator of the Law Society of Hong Kong.
