Asia a Top Destination for Expatriates

There are many expatriates who work far and wide in countries where they were not born. These people occupy a unique niche in the international workforce because they bring the cultural values and ideals of their birth nation to another, and the business experience they practice can have a positive effect on any company. Recently, expatriates from Europe and other continents are flocking to Asia to enjoy the new employment opportunities there.

For example, the AFP reported the number of French expatriates grew by 22 percent in Indonesia and 11.4 percent in China during 2011. There are currently over 100,000 French expatriates residing in the Asia-Pacific locale, which is almost ten percent of the worldwide number of French citizens working abroad.

“Companies have been coming to Asia for several months or a year looking for the profits that they can no longer find — or not to the extent they did before — in France,” said Mattieu Lefort, director of the French government’s export assistance office in Hong Kong, according to the news source.

Legal recruitment firms are focusing specifically on countries in Southeast Asia due to the sheer market influence these nations have on the global economy. For instance, News Track India reported the prime minister of Singapore recently announced his country’s desire to support intellectual property growth in the region.
