Law Firm Expansion in China

Those seeking legal recruitment by Asian businesses need look no further than China – this particular nation has always had a complex relationship with the United States, but recently, many American law firms and corporate chains have begun opening up offices in Chinese metro areas.

For example, Law Fuel reported law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe hired two new partners for its office locations in Beijing and Hong Kong. Capital market lawyer Matthew Lewis will begin in Hong Kong and eventually be named a partner in Beijing, while mergers and acquisitions specialist Seung Chong will operate solely from the Hong Kong branch.

“Matthew is a valuable addition to the team and will further strengthen our China corporate platform,” said Global Capital Markets Practice head Edwin Luk, according to the news source. “As we continue developing our regional capital markets practice, particularly our integrated U.S. and Hong Kong securities capabilities, we are pleased to have someone with Matthew’s depth of experience.”

Private equity group head Maurice Hoo added “Demand for Orrick’s cross-border complex M&A services continues to grow, and we are delighted to be joined by Seung Chong, one of the most outstanding M&A lawyers in the region.”

A focus on China is not limited to capital and M&A firms, however – The Wall Street Journal reported Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu CEO Barry Salzberg pledged to spend $160 million investing in audit firms and financial companies in China. From a legal standpoint, the foreign business environment in China is viewed as very profitable by industry experts.
