ALB HONG KONG LAW AWARDS 2011

While not as illustrious or entertaining as the recent Emmys, the ALB Hong Kong Law awards often showcase and illuminate the many exciting developments in the Hong Kong legal markets over the past year.   The event, a black tie affair, is in its 10th year and is considered by many to be the “night of the year” for Hong Kong’s legal and finance leaders.    The 2011 ALB Hong Kong Law Awards were held on September 15, 2011.

Key awards are as follows:

  • The highly coveted Hong Kong Law Firm of the Year award went to Linklaters.
  • Mayer Brown JSM took home the most individual trophies – four in the categories of Employment Law Firm of the Year, Insolvency and Restructuring Law Firm of the Year, Insurance Law Firm of the Year, and Real Estate Law Firm of the Year.
  • Debt Market Deal of the Year was the McDonalds Corporation RMB Bond Offering, which featured Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton; Deacons; and Simmons & Simmons as well as Standard Chartered Bank.
  • Equity Market Deal of the Year was the AIA IPO, which featured Davis Polk & Wardwell; Debevoise & Plimpton; Freshfields; Herbert Smith; King & Wood, Linklaters; Sullivan & Cromwell and Charltons; as well as Bank of America Merrill Lynch; Barclays; CIMB Securities; Citigroup; Credit Suisse; Deutsche Bank; Federal Reserve Bank of New York; Goldman Sachs; ICBC;  J.P. Morgan; Morgan Stanley; and UBS.
  • The M&A Deal of the year was the Disneyland Shanghai transaction, which featured the firms Baker & McKenzie; Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison; and ZhongLun.
  • The Korea Deal of the Year was the Samsung Life IPO, which featured the firms Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton; Kim & Chang; Shin & Kim and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, as well as Bank of America Merrill Lynch; Citigroup; Goldman Sachs; KB Investment; Korea Investment & Securities; Morgan Stanley; Nomura; Samsung Securities; Shinhan Investment Corp; Tong Yang Securities; and Woori Investment.
