A&O Expands Global Litigation Practice with Partner Hire in Perth

The firm has today announced the appointment of leading litigator Mark van Brakel as a partner based in our Perth office, starting today, Tuesday 28th May.

With the continued success of the litigation practice in Australia, Mark’s appointment will enable A&O to increase its capacity to provide globally integrated litigation, international arbitration and contentious regulatory support to its clients, particularly in the energy and resources sector.

Mark brings to the role extensive experience in these areas. He has acted for leading corporations in the energy and resources sector on matters ranging from major engineering, project and joint venture disputes and arbitrations through to director and shareholder disputes. He has also acted in significant regulatory investigations and civil penalty proceedings.

Mark was previously a senior litigation partner at a major domestic Australian firm.

Tim House, Global Head of Litigation, welcomes Mark’s appointment: “Our litigation practice is now well established in Australia, having won instructions on a range of significant matters from important global, regional and local clients.

“Mark’s appointment is a necessary step in meeting client demand for our offering. It also reflects our determination to be recognised as a compelling choice for complex and significant disputes and contentious regulatory issues. Mark joins the team established by Sydney litigation partner John Samaha to provide strong coverage in Australia.”

Geoff Simpson, Managing Partner of our Perth office, says of the appointment: “Mark is a recognised leader in his field. We are delighted to appoint Mark as lead litigation partner in our Perth office and extend our Perth-based offering.”

Mark’s appointment brings A&O’s Australian partner tally to 21, with the support of over 150 staff. This outstanding growth has been fuelled by positive client response to our focus on leveraging our global and domestic expertise.
