Clayton Utz attracts Asia project finance specialist

Clayton Utz continues to deliver on its commitment to providing clients with first-class legal services with the announcement that leading Asia Pacific project finance lawyer Bruce Cooper will join the firm’s Sydney Banking & Financial Services practice as a partner in September, from UK magic circle firm Freshfields.Mr Cooper has spent the past 18 years of his career in Asia, most recently in Hong Kong where he led Freshfields’ regional finance practice group overseeing a practice that spanned from China to Nigeria. He also practised with Freshfields in Singapore for 14 years, covering jurisdictions from Indonesia to India.

During his many years in Asia Mr Cooper gained experience on a wide range of transactions across the banking, infrastructure, project finance and energy and natural resources sectors in jurisdictions including Australia, the Pacific Islands, South East Asia, North Asia, the Caspian region, Africa and the Middle East.

He has experience as both lender’s and borrower’s counsel and as adviser to a range of energy and resources companies.

Clayton Utz Chief Executive Partner David Fagan said Mr Cooper’s appointment would add significant strength to the firm’s national projects capability.

“Recruiting Bruce to our national Banking & Financial Services team was a unique opportunity. We are delighted he has chosen Clayton Utz,” said Mr Fagan.

“Project finance is an area where we anticipate strong growth opportunities flowing from the Federal government’s ongoing commitment to significant investment in infrastructure projects and the continuing energy and resources boom driven by demand from China and India.

“Bruce’s significant project finance experience – particularly his many years’ experience in Asia advising on major energy and resources project financing transactions – will be particularly attractive to Australian sponsors and financiers.”

Mr Cooper’s appointment follows the recent announcement that leading securitisation lawyer Andrew Jinks will join Clayton Utz as a partner in August.
