Clyde & Co Grows Asia Pacific Shipping, Trade and Commodities Practices with Team Hire

International law firm Clyde & Co is delighted to announce the appointment of shipping, trade and commodities partner Maurice Thompson. As part of the firm’s core sector strategy, Maurice, who will be based in Melbourne, will lead the firm’s shipping, trade and commodities practices in Australia, and will be a key part of the firm’s rapidly growing regional practices in those sectors.

Maurice arrives from HWL Ebsworth and will be joined by Senior Associates Renee Amundsen and James Cooper.

Maurice has been recognised by the International Who’s Who of Shipping & Maritime Lawyers, the Guide to the World’s Leading Shipping & Maritime Lawyers, Doyle’s Guide to the Australian Legal Profession and Chambers & Partners as one of the leading shipping and commodities lawyers in Australia. His practice comprises a broad spectrum of contentious and non-contentious matters for clients in the shipping, grain, mining, port and oil & gas industries both in Australia and internationally. With a significant practice across both Victoria and Western Australia, Maurice will also be working closely with the firm’s Perth, Sydney and Singapore offices in developing the firm’s regional shipping, trade and commodities practices.

Maurice said “I am thrilled to be joining Clyde & Co in the next phase of development of the firm’s Australian offering. With increased competition in Australia around the export of commodities and the value of Australia’s mineral and offshore oil & gas resources, Clyde & Co’s entry into these Australian markets is timely and will provide companies participating in these specialised sectors with a welcome alternative and a truly global and commercially savvy perspective.”

John Edmond, the head of Clyde & Co’s Sydney office said “This is a ‘home coming’ of sorts for Maurice, who spent five years with Clyde & Co in the Middle East to 2003. Once the firm was ready to explore the possibility of developing its shipping and trade & commodities practices in Australia, and in response to growing client demand in Australia and across the region, it was an easy decision for the firm as to who to approach. “

Clyde & Co’s Australian shipping, trade and commodities practices will service clients with presence in Asia Pacific and emerging markets in response to growing client demand across the region. The Australian offices have now grown to nine partners and 45 legal staff, in a year since the opening of offices in Sydney and Perth.

Internationally, Clyde & Co has the largest shipping practice in the world with over 170 specialist marine lawyers based in trading hubs around the globe, on call and serving clients’ requirements across all time-zones.
