Dentons Rodyk Enhances Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice With New Hire Shobna Chandran

Dentons Rodyk & Davidson LLP, part of the world’s largest law firm, Dentons, is pleased to announce that Shobna Chandran has joined the Firm as part of its Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice group.

Shobna brings with her more than 10 years of experience in high value litigation, arbitration and contentious regulatory and advisory work. She worked in the litigation department of one of the top local firms in Singapore for more than four years, before moving on to an international firm prior to joining Clifford Chance Asia* in 2013. An excellent advocate, she has extensive experience in leading and managing complex cross border litigation and arbitration matters with a South East Asian and South Asian focus. She also does high stakes contentious regulatory / advisory work including global investigations by regulators. Her clients include global and regional financial institutions, funds and multinational corporations. During her career she has acted on a variety of matters, including:
•Representing an Indian listed company in a SIAC arbitration arising out of a share purchase agreement valued at more than US$800 million
•Representing the property development and investment arm of a major investment bank in a suit against a joint venture partner, with the assets in question worth more than AUD580 million
•Representing and advising clients on a LCIA arbitration under a mining contract (worth over half a billion USD) in relation to coal mines in Africa
•Representing and advising clients on regulatory issues concerning Schemes of Transfer under the Banking Act and Insurance Act, including one of the largest multi-billion dollar merger in the insurance industry in recent times

Shobna graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2006 with First Class Honours, and was placed on the Dean’s List in all four years of her study. She graduated at close to the top of her class, and received various prizes and accolades for her stellar academic achievements. She was also ranked 13th in the Postgraduate Practical Law Course. Upon graduation, she was handpicked to serve as a Justices’ Law Clerk for former Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong and the Court of Appeal bench before entering private practice in 2008.

Shobna is a rising star in the arbitration community, actively contributing to thought leadership publications and speaking at conferences / seminars. After her excellent performance at the Singapore International Arbitration Academy 2014 (Centre for International Law, NUS), she was invited to be part of the Faculty for successive editions of the regional course. In recognition of her prominence in and contributions to the young arbitration community, she was elected as a member of the Young Members Group Executive Committee (Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Singapore Branch) in June 2017. She has also been invited to serve as a member of the Professional Development Sub-committee of the Professional Affairs Committee (Singapore Academy of Law), which addresses topical and current issues in the practice of law.

Shobna seeks to pay it forward and make a positive impact on younger lawyers. She enjoys teaching arbitration and ethics & professional responsibility at Singapore Institute of Legal Education’s Part B course, coaching moot teams and teaching advocacy at NUS. She has also recently been appointed to the Board of Advisors to the United Kingdom Singapore Law Students’ Society (UKSLSS) in recognition of her extensive engagement, outreach to and mentoring of undergraduate law students.

Shobna is heavily involved in pro bono and community work, and is a volunteer with the Supreme Court’s Legal Assistance for Capital Offences (LASCO). She has also volunteered on the Law Society’s fund raising committee for pro-bono work.
