Eversheds Strengthens Asian Arbitration and Public International Law Capabilities as Market Opportunities Grow

As the market for arbitration and international law grows across Asia, two of Eversheds senior team, partner Rod Bundy and Of Counsel Loretta Malintoppi, have moved to the firm’s Singapore office to focus on further developing the firm’s international arbitration and public international law practice in the region.

The moves reflect Eversheds’ firm-wide strategy to deploy world class talent in major growth environments to further strengthen its global service offering.

Stephen Kitts, Managing Partner of Eversheds Asia said:

“Rod and Loretta are both heavyweights in the world of global arbitration with an unrivalled reputation for inter-state public law disputes. Singapore is firmly establishing itself as a global centre for arbitration and Rod and Loretta’s expertise will help Eversheds develop its market position as the leading firm for this specialist type of disputes in the region. They are a welcome asset to the team as they strengthen our litigation expertise in Asia.”

Rod Bundy commented:

“The opportunities for growth in Asia for arbitration and public international law are enormous. Having an on the ground presence in Singapore is a major step in developing further the firm’s position here and enhancing our global capability for handling complex and commercially sensitive cases.”

Rod leads the firm’s public international law team and has over 30 years of experience as counsel and advocate in high profile public international law cases and international investment treaty and commercial arbitrations. His clients include Governments, multinational energy companies, construction companies and State-owned entities. Rod is consistently top-ranked in both the Legal 500 and Chambers directories. He was also named best arbitration lawyer in France by Les Échos 2013.

Loretta is dual-qualified in France and Italy and specialises in international arbitration and public international law. She is one of the vice-presidents of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (“ICC”) and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai International Arbitration Chamber (“DIAC”). In addition to her work as counsel and advocate, Loretta also acts extensively as an arbitrator and is regarded by Chambers Global as a leading individual in public international law and international arbitration. She is a co-author of “The ICSID Convention: A Commentary”, the leading treatise on investment treaty arbitrations before ICSID, the World Bank’s arbitration centre.

Both Rod and Loretta join Eversheds Singapore from the firm’s Paris office where they have built a reputation as leading arbitration and international law experts. They will be responsible for growing the firm’s public international law and arbitration practice as part of the litigation team in Singapore, led by Asia Head of Litigation Ivan Ng, and will bring with them a number of worldwide mandates. The pair have advised on a number of important Asian disputes including representing the Governments of Singapore and Indonesia in two cases before the International Court of Justice (“ICJ”). In addition, Rod is currently acting for the Government of Cambodia before the ICJ in proceedings concerning the interpretation of the Court’s judgment in the famous Temple of Preah Vihear case. He has also been awarded the title of Dato by His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam in recognition of his work in that country.

The move reflects a new phase in the seamless integration between the Eversheds’ Singapore and Paris offices. A number of matters are already staffed between those offices, building on secondments between them, and this trajectory is expected to increase and strengthen further with Rod’s and Loretta’s move to Singapore. A recent example is a major SIAC arbitration in the oil and gas sector which was staffed between the firm’s Singapore, Paris and London offices.

Paris-based partner Will Thomas has recently been named the new global head of Eversheds’ international arbitration group, comprising a team of over 30 specialised lawyers, adding further impetus to this growing practice area. Thomas replaces Zurich-based partner, Claudius Triebold, who will step up to a newly created position of global head of international disputes.
