Hogan Lovells has expanded its intellectual property team in Tokyo with the hire of Dr Frederick Ch’en who started on 1 April 2013 as Of Counsel. This follows on the recruitment of fourteen IP practitioners in Tokyo over the past twelve months including the hire of Of Counsel Peter Hansen who joined the firm in November 2012.
Dr Frederick Ch’en is an English solicitor, a U.S. attorney and patent attorney, a registered foreign attorney in Japan, and a U.K. chartered biologist. He trained and worked for seven years at a leading international law firm in London before becoming head of IP at a top-tier global law firm in Tokyo. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Frederick was a biomedical research scientist at Oxford University. He has wide experience advising on a broad range of contentious and non-contentious IP matters, with particular focus on multi-jurisdictional patent litigation as well as IP licensing and IP aspects of transactions. He also has substantial expertise advising clients in the life sciences sector.
Peter Hansen has over 20 years’ experience advising on brand protection and enforcement, trade mark and copyright infringement, domain names, patents, and commercial IP matters. He started his career in Australia where he became partner of a top-tier Australian law firm. Peter then lived and worked in the Middle East for 11 years, managing intellectual property firms in the UAE and Syria. He has studied in Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Yemen and has high-level Arabic language skills.
The expanded Tokyo IP team comprises over 30 IP professionals including three partners, all of whom are bilingual in English and Japanese, offering both Japanese domestic and international IP legal advice (especially in Europe, USA and Asia).
