John Lo and Ken Choy Join Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge as Partners

The law firm of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge (EAPD) is pleased to announce that John Lo and Kenneth Y. Choy have joined the firm as partners. They will base their respective practices in EAPD’s associated Hong Kong office, Lister Swartz.

An experienced corporate lawyer, Lo brings expertise in emerging companies, venture capital, private equity, mergers and acquisitions, and investment in and out of China. He also advises clients in a range of other matters, including intellectual property, tax, corporate finance, and life sciences. After starting his legal career in San Francisco, he was instrumental in representing PRC conglomerates in the US in the late 1980s. Lo comes to EAPD from King & Wood.

Choy is a seasoned intellectual property practitioner who has advised international companies on the enforcement of IP rights and the resolution of commercial disputes. The former chief legal officer of an international technology group in China, Choy has considerable experience in licensing, distribution, agency, franchising and branding matters. He has also represented clients involved in cross-border transactions and investment matters related to intangible assets and IP rights. He also comes to EAPD from King & Wood.

“The growth of our Hong Kong office is a strategic priority for EAPD, particularly in areas like IP and business law, which are core strengths of the firm,” said Walter G.D. Reed, the managing partner of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge. “With their respective areas of expertise, as well as their close knowledge of the vital Chinese market, John and Ken are helping us execute this critical element of our firm-wide strategy.”

“John and Ken will add significant bench strength to our growing office in Hong Kong,” added Kristi L. Swartz, the partner in charge of Lister Swartz. “Our clients will benefit substantially from their experience in corporate law and intellectual property, and we’re delighted to welcome them to the firm.”

With the arrival of Lo and Choy, the Hong Kong office of EAPD has welcomed three lateral partners in the past five months. In August 2010, Andrew Lui joined the firm as a partner in the Business Law Department.

Lo is admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong and has earned MBA and JD degrees from the University of California at Berkeley, as well as an MS in taxation from Golden Gate University. A graduate of San Francisco State University and the Northeastern University School of Law, Choy is also admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong. He is also admitted to the bars of the states of New York and California. Both men are proficient in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, and Lo is also proficient in Shanghai dialect.
