King & Wood Mallesons has strengthened its leading Real Estate, Construction and Environment practice with the hire of partner Sonya Harris to the firm’s Sydney office.
Sonya joins King & Wood Mallesons from Mirvac Group where she was the General Counsel and Company Secretary, managing the provision of all legal advice to the Mirvac Group. She led the Mirvac legal team on many of Mirvac’s key transactions, such as the acquisition of the $1.2 billion Westpac Office Trust, the redevelopment of major industrial project Hoxton Park, the acquisition of Harold Park in NSW and the redevelopment of the Old Treasury buildings in Perth, WA.
Prior to her position at Mirvac, Sonya was Deputy General Counsel at Multiplex (now Brookfield) and worked on key Australian projects such as the Macquarie Bank, American Express and KPMG buildings at King Street Wharf, Bishops See in Perth and the City Square (BHP head office) project in Perth. Sonya was also a Partner at Minter Ellison in the Sydney construction practice from 1999, working on major construction and infrastructure projects.
Sonya’s appointment reflects the firm’s ongoing commitment to inject new talent and grow its real estate and development projects capability.
Sonya’s wealth of experience complements King & Wood Mallesons’ leading Real Estate, Construction and Environment practice, which has recently acted on a number of high profile deals. These include advising on a landmark real estate deal to deliver a $2 billion investment in Sydney’s Barangaroo development, the redevelopment of the historic Old Treasury Building Precinct in Perth, and Perron Investments’ acquisition of a 50% stake in three of Centro’s high grade shopping centres.
Managing Partner Tony O’Malley said: “We are delighted that Sonya has chosen to join King & Wood Mallesons. Sonya’s appointment reflects our commitment to the property and construction sectors both within Australia and offshore.
