Leading Energy & Resources Team Joins King & Wood Mallesons Beijing Office

Asia’s powerhouse law firm, King & Wood Mallesons, has announced the recruitment of three senior lawyers to its Beijing office. The hires reinforce the firm’s Energy & Resources capability, a pillar of the strategy that underpinned the recent combination of the leading firms in China and Australia earlier this year.

Dirk Walker (Partner) and Dina Yin (Of Counsel) together with an associate have accepted an offer to join King & Wood Mallesons as of June 1, 2012. Dirk Walker joins from Dewey & LeBoeuf in Beijing. Dina Yin, who joins from Linklaters, was also formerly with the Beijing and Houston offices of Dewey & LeBoeuf.

Wang Ling, Managing Partner of King & Wood Mallesons (PRC), said, “The Energy & Resources (“E&R”) sector continues to be a priority for us. The regional market is fiercely competitive. With the arrival of one of the leading E&R teams to King & Wood Mallesons, we are able to provide clients with unparalleled substantive experience and fire-power. This is proof that we are delivering on our commitment to our clients. We continue to invest in world class capability which is aligned with our clients’ needs.”

Dirk’s experience includes representing a large state-owned Chinese oil & gas company in its joint acquisition with KMG, one of the largest private oil & gas company in Kazakhstan (deal amount of US$ 3.3 billion), as well as several state-owned Chinese oil companies in connection with numerous outbound acquisitions and development of upstream and downstream projects in Africa, South America, the US, and the CIS. Dirk’s background as a petroleum engineer and 5 years in Beijing leading outbound deals makes his skills and knowledge particularly valuable and unique. Dina’s experience focuses on representing PRC and international energy and mining companies in both outbound and inbound acquisitions and projects. Her experience includes representing several Chinese companies with their bids and acquisitions of oil and gas and mining assets in Africa, Asia, Russia and Kazakhstan. She has recently represented a French energy company in connection with its development of a refinery and petrochemical joint venture project in Guangdong, China.

Commenting on his decision, Dirk said, “I’m delighted to be joining the leading firm in China and re-joining partners with whom I’ve worked closely in the past and rate highly. It’s a fantastic time to be part of King & Wood Mallesons, a firm that has a clear vision and strategy in Asia. There are obvious synergies between our areas of expertise and focus. In weighing up my options, I spoke to a number of clients who resoundingly support this decision.”
