Mayer Brown expands Real Estate practice with addition of partner Kwon Lee

Mayer Brown announced today that Kwon Lee has joined the firm’s global Real Estate practice as a partner. Mr. Lee will initially be working out of Hong Kong before moving to the firm’s New York office at year’s end. As an active member of the Asia Real Estate outbound team, Mr. Lee will focus his practice on outbound alternative capital investment from Asia, including real estate investment matters.

An investment advisor to local and central government authorities in Korea, Mr. Lee also sits on the investment review board of several pension funds in Korea. He has more than 20 years of experience advising on a wide range of cross-border transactions. He has advised pension funds, construction companies, financial institutions and conglomerates seeking investment into large-scale overseas development projects, as well as the sale and acquisition of various types of assets. In addition to working with Korean clients, Mr. Lee also has close working relationships with major investors and funds in Australia, China, France, Germany, Japan, Middle Eastern countries, the Netherlands, Singapore, and the United States.

“Kwon is well-regarded by clients and widely recognized by the real estate industry as a leading practitioner,” said Jeff Usow, co-leader of Mayer Brown’s global Real Estate practice. “At a time when we see additional outbound opportunities from the Korean market and other Asian markets, such as Japan and Singapore, Kwon’s experience is particularly valuable to Korean clients seeking to invest overseas. His arrival will enhance our already strong global Real Estate practice, and we are very pleased to have him join the firm.”

Mr. Lee was awarded the Minister of National Defense Citation/Decoration for Outstanding Legal Service twice. He has been described as “one of the most impressive real estate lawyers in Korea” and “a top player in the real estate market, especially with regards to cross-border transactions” by leading legal directory Chambers & Partners. Chambers also named Mr. Lee an “Eminent Practitioner” in its 2014 guide.

Before joining Mayer Brown, Mr. Lee was the managing partner (global corporate practice) at a leading law firm in Seoul. Previously, he was a senior member at Kim & Chang, where he led the cross-border real estate and construction practice group after serving at a leading international law firm in New York earlier in his career.

Mr. Lee is admitted to the New York bar. He earned an MA from the University of Chicago; a JD from the University of Minnesota Law School; and a BA from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
