Michael Legg, Class Action and Litigation Lawyer, Joins Jones Day in Sydney

The global law firm Jones Day has announced that Michael Legg, one of Australia’s leading class action and litigation scholars, has joined the Firm in Sydney in its Global Disputes Practice, serving the Firm’s clients in Australia and overseas.

Chris Ahern, Partner-in-Charge of the Sydney Office said, “We are delighted to be adding Michael to our ranks in the Sydney Office, as he is widely respected by the class action bar. He should be a great boon for the local and offshore clients of Jones Day, having worked in class actions, regulatory proceedings, and complex commercial disputes over the last decade”.

In recent years Mr. Legg has advised numerous clients concerning disputes arising out of the global financial crisis. In the class action arena he has represented an international airline in two multi-respondent class actions brought by travel agents based on allegations of misleading conduct and breach of contract, as well as representing banks and other financial institutions in class actions brought by investors in financial products.

He also has advised institutional investors in their participation in shareholder class actions and litigation funding arrangements, while also advising them and other major companies in areas of compliance with the Corporations Act, including directors’ duties, continuous disclosure, accounting and auditing requirements, and the operation of management investment schemes. He has represented a range of corporate clients in Australian Securities and Investment Commission investigations, and defended companies in cartel proceedings commenced by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Tim Cullen, head of the Global Disputes Practice, said, “We are pleased to welcome Michael to the firm. He is greatly respected among his peers and his broad experience in class actions and complex commercial disputes adds further strength to our Global Disputes practice in Australia and in the Asia-Pacific region.”

Mr. Legg holds a Masters of Law from the University of California, Berkeley, in addition to his Australian qualifications and admissions. He is admitted to the New York bar and has practised law in both New York and Australia over the last 14 years. He is an associate professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, where he teaches and does research work in the areas of civil justice, procedure, complex regulatory and civil litigation, as well as corporate law. Chris Ahern added, “beyond class actions, Michael’s academic work includes other areas of corporate and regulatory litigation, which are attractive to high end corporate clients and government.”

Mr Legg’s appointment as of counsel follows the recent addition of another leading litigation lawyer, John Emmerig, to the Sydney Office as a partner in its Global Disputes Practice. Mr. Emmerig joined Jones Day from Ashurst Australia, where he was a senior partner in that firm’s litigation group, head of its national class actions practice, and a leading figure in its government practice.
