Dr. Kening Li has joined the law firm of Miller Canfield in Shanghai, China, as Chief of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group – China.
Dr. Li has more than 15 years of experience in intellectual property. He has worked with clients ranging from academic institutions, start-ups to Fortune 500 companies in managing IP assets as an integral part of their business strategies.
He joins Miller Canfield from Pinsent Masons LLP in the Asia Pacific region, where he was the leader of the IP team.
He has a wide range of IP and commercial legal experiences, including formulating intellectual property strategies, resolving difficult freedom-to-operate obstacles, negotiating licensing agreements, and using existing intellectual property portfolios to strengthen client’s competitive positions. He has extensive experience in worldwide patent prosecution in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and chemical arts, and in patent litigations in both China and the U.S., and Section 337 investigations before the U.S. International Trade Commission. In China, in addition to IP, he and his team advise international clients on employment disputes, data protection and privacy issues, and regulatory approval of pharmaceuticals and medical devices. The team also advises Chinese clients in their international activities, including technology and asset acquisition.

Li received his J.D., with honors, from the University of Wisconsin Law School, Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.S. from Nanjing Agricultural University, China, and his B.S. from Nanjing University, China.
Joining the firm with Dr. Li will be two additional intellectual property professionals: Intellectual Property Counsel Yali (Alicia) Li and Intellectual Property Specialist Hanqin Lin. Together, the team will expand Miller Canfield’s Intellectual Property practice in China. Miller Canfield’s Shanghai office was established in 2008.
Miller Canfield’s IP lawyers help clients protect their IP assets including copyrights, patents, trademarks and brands, and trade secrets and non-compete agreements, including search, procurement, enforcement and anti-counterfeiting.
