RPC Hires High Profile Marine and Energy Insurance Partner in Singapore

International law firm RPC has significantly boosted its market-leading insurance practice with the hire of Partner Iain Anderson in Singapore.

Iain joins from marine firm Ince & Co where he was Head of the firm’s Asia Insurance and Reinsurance Group. He specialises in handling marine and offshore energy claims and coverage issues for a wide range of insurers and reinsurers. His practice also includes work on political and trade credit insurance, as well as both dry and wet shipping disputes.

With 17 years’ international involvement in the insurance industry, Iain’s experience spans the London Market, Piraeus and the Middle East. Based in Singapore since 2010, Iain handles work for the principal marine hull insurers in Singapore and has quickly developed a reputation as one of the “go to” marine insurance lawyers in the region.

He has handled some of the biggest marine total loss claims in the market, and receives significant instructions on the energy side from a range of global insurer clients.

RPC Managing Partner Jonathan Watmough said: “Iain is a landmark hire for us and underlines our commitment to growing in Singapore and helping our insurance clients with their needs globally.

“The support we have had from those clients since we opened in Singapore in 2011 has been fantastic. Iain’s arrival significantly broadens our practice and will allow us to handle a much wider range of complex disputes, including in the marine and energy fields.

“He will also work very closely with our Partners in Hong Kong, further strengthening our capability to handle a comprehensive spread of work across the whole Asia Pacific region.”

Mark Errington – an insurance and disputes Partner who leads RPC’s Singapore office – says: “Iain’s reputation in the Singapore marine insurance market is second to none so I’m very pleased that he will be joining RPC. His considerable and well-recognised expertise in offshore energy insurance disputes neatly complements the power and energy side of my own practice, giving us arguably the leading team for that kind of insurance work in the region.”

RPC now has four partners in Asia supporting the insurance industry in marine and energy disputes ensuring the firm is able to offer the full spread of services to its marine clients.

Iain Anderson said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at Ince & Co and am grateful for all the opportunities that the firm has given me over the years. The time is now right, however, for me to look for new challenges and I have been very impressed by the dynamism, ambition and progressive outlook of all of the people I’ve met at RPC.

“The firm is on an upward curve with a genuine collegiate approach. I’m really looking forward to being a part of that and helping Mark and the team build the premier international insurance practice in Singapore.”

Iain’s arrival follows the recent hire of Summer Montague in Singapore from Mayer Brown International. Summer is an insurance and reinsurance Associate with considerable experience in property, construction, product liability, professional negligence and financial lines insurance.

In August, RPC further strengthened its Asia marine presence – through its association with Smyth & Co in Hong Kong – with the recruitment of Admiralty Manager Donal Keaney and senior lawyer Gwenette Vetuz, bringing the team to 11 case handlers in total.

RPC first opened in Singapore in November 2011, expanding their presence in Asia with the establishment of an office in Hong Kong in August 2012.
