International law firm Stephenson Harwood LLP has made three lateral appointments:
Hugh Dong has joined Stephenson Harwood’s Beijing office, as a legal director. The appointment follows the office’s official opening in June, making it Stephenson Harwood’s fourth office in Greater China.
Hugh has extensive experience in both contentious and non-contentious matters in the fields of shipping, construction, corporate law and securities. He has significant experience as a litigator at various levels of Chinese court and CIETAC arbitration. He also advises a wide range of clients on investment in and out of China, M&A and other cross-border transactions.
Hugh was a partner at a Chinese local law firm in Beijing before joining Stephenson Harwood, and also worked at an international law firm for three years. He is familiar with both the domestic and international legal environment.
Hugh commented, “I am delighted to join the Beijing office. I think it is dynamic team with a clear idea of what it wants to achieve, and its strong international network will provide a good base from which to offer a first class service to our clients.”
Peter Hodson has joined the Hong Kong office’s wealth management practice as a consultant and head of trust. Peter has broad experience in banking, finance, wealth management and fiduciary services. He worked as legal counsel at the legal departments of the Jardine Matheson Group, Standard Chartered Bank Trustees and was previously managing director of two bank-owned trust companies in Hong Kong, as well as advising high net worth individuals, family offices and financial institutions. Peter has experience as a mediator and facilitator in trust and finance related disputes, and has acted as an expert witness in trust cases.
Peter is a senior tutor for the Society for Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP) foundation and runs diploma courses in international trust management operated by Central Law Training in the UK. He is a part-time lecturer at the Hong Kong University, teaching trust law on the Hong Kong PCLL Programme.
Peter commented: “Wealth Management Department is one of the fast growing practice groups in Stephenson Harwood. The team is now advising an increasing number of high net worth individuals, and a trust is one of the wealth planning tools that these individuals need. My background has been in advising such individuals on appropriate structures for their wealth planning needs, and I will aim to ensure the advice and support they receive is equal to the high benchmarks Stephenson Harwood has set for itself in all other aspects of its work.”
Jezamine Fewins has joined the Hong Kong office’s commercial litigation practice as a consultant. Her practice focuses on employment matters, with a bias to contentious matters particularly in relation to the enforcement of post termination restrictive covenants and all aspects of intellectual property matters including trademarks, patents, registered designs and copyright.
She acts for a wide variety of international corporations spanning industries including sportswear, fashion, automotive, electronics, traditional Chinese medicine, healthcare, food and beverages, LEDs, chemicals, aviation, education, mining, hospitality and transportation.
Jezamine commented: “Employment and intellectual property issues are often challenging for companies doing business in this region. My mission at Stephenson Harwood will be to help our clients surmount the difficulties they encounter in these areas. I look forward to working closely with the established team and broadening our client offering.”
Announcing the new arrivals, Stephenson Harwood’s Greater China managing partner, Voon Keat LAI, said the appointments reflect Stephenson Harwood’s continuing commitment to expand the breadth and depth of the Greater China offices’ and the firm’s focus on Asia.
