Shearman & Sterling Strengthens Middle East, Private Equity, and Project Development and Finance Practices with Return of Marwan Elaraby

Shearman & Sterling will solidify its exceptional standing in the Middle East and in private equity and project development and finance with the return of Marwan Elaraby as Managing Partner-Middle East. Elaraby, a former capital markets partner in the firm’s New York office, served most recently as Managing Director at Citadel Capital, one of the leading private equity firms in the Middle East and Africa. He will be based in the firm’s Abu Dhabi office, where he previously worked with the firm as a project development and finance associate from 1996-1998.

“Marwan is a very significant addition to our firm,” said Creighton Condon, the firm’s Senior Partner. “He is very well known throughout the Middle East and has been involved in a number of the region’s most significant development projects.”

Abu Dhabi office managing partner Philip Dundas added, “Marwan has worked on virtually all types of corporate transactions and has deep and important relationships with his current clients. We see him as someone who can help us continue to expand our private equity, project development and finance, corporate and dispute resolution practices in the region.”

Since leaving the firm, Elaraby has been with Citadel Capital in Cairo. He also served as Executive Director in EFG-Hermes’ investment banking group, where he worked as an investment banker advising clients on numerous capital markets and M&A transactions. In recent years Elaraby has focused on sourcing and executing investments in a variety of sectors, with a particular emphasis on energy. Among his accomplishments is leading the team that conceived, planned, negotiated, and financed the Egyptian Refining Company’s Mostorod Refinery—a $3.7 billion investment that is Africa’s largest-ever private sector project. A regular speaker at conferences, Elaraby is also a frequent guest on CNN, BBC, CNBC, and Bloomberg business programs.

“This is a great time to be coming back to Shearman & Sterling,” Elaraby said. “We are at a moment of great change and energy throughout the region, and that presents an important opportunity for the firm—already a trusted advisor to companies and governments in the Middle East—to drive continued development and to expand its regional and global footprint.”

Partners Philip Dundas and James Comyn will maintain responsibility for the management of the firm’s Abu Dhabi office as office managing partner and deputy office managing partner, respectively.
