Susan Bastress Rejoins Patton Boggs

Susan B. Bastress, former managing partner of the Doha, Qatar office of Patton Boggs LLP, has rejoined the firm as a partner. Ms. Bastress, a leading advisor to American companies seeking advice on business laws in the Middle East, will initially practice from Patton Boggs’ Washington DC office. Later this year, she will return to and be resident in the firm’s Doha office.

Ms. Bastress established Patton Boggs’ Doha office in 2003, and served as its managing partner until 2006. She joined Patton Boggs initially in 1996 and was a member of the firm’s Real Estate practice group. She was chair of the firm’s Real Estate practice at the time of her departure in 2008.

Ms. Bastress advises multinational companies seeking advice on the business climate of the Middle East. She leverages an extensive background in real estate, hospitality, alternative dispute resolution and commercial law, advising American firms doing business in the Arabian Gulf. Ms. Bastress also has significant experience advising sovereign entities in the finance, education, health and hospitality sectors.

“Susan Bastress was essential to helping Patton Boggs achieve the level of success we enjoy today in Doha,” noted Edward J. Newberry, managing partner of Patton Boggs. “She will rejoin a truly excellent leadership team that has continued the forward movement she initiated in 2003,” Mr. Newberry added. “We are extremely pleased to welcome Susan back to Patton Boggs.”

As the first non-Qatari attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Qatar, Ms. Bastress enjoys considerable esteem in a region where trust and ethics drive business culture. Patton Boggs has a long history of service to the Middle East region, and continues to enjoy success there – not only in the firm’s Doha office, but also in offices in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi. An understanding of the values that drive business relationships in the Middle East has contributed to the firm’s longstanding success in the region, and informs the counsel the firm provides its clients.

Ms. Bastress was a partner in the Real Estate practice at Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe from 2008 to 2010, at which point she established Bastress & Associates.  She holds her J.D. from George Washington University.  Ms. Bastress is a member of the board of governors of the Middle East Institute.
