Vinson & Elkins Adds Prominent International Project Finance Lawyer In Abu Dhabi

The international law firm Vinson & Elkins LLP continues to expand its Middle East practice with the addition of project development and finance partner, Jon Nash.

Nash, a former partner at Chadbourne & Parke in London, represents public and private entities involved in major energy, infrastructure, transportation, and water projects in the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, and Europe. He has advised on several award-winning project finance transactions in the infrastructure sector including independent power and water projects in Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, and Jordan. Jon is also well known for his work on construction matters.

“We are thrilled to add Jon to our Abu Dhabi office and further expand our regional energy and projects practice,” said Lewis Jones, managing partner of V&E’s UAE offices. “The power, water, and infrastructure sectors will continue to see a very significant amount of activity in the coming years and we want to provide the best possible offering to our clients. Jon brings incredible depth of experience in these areas.” Jon becomes the fourth partner in V&E’s Abu Dhabi office and the eighth in the UAE, further strengthening the firm’s deep bench in the market.

A 1992 graduate of Nottingham University School of Law, Nash was recognized this year by Chambers UK as a leading lawyer for project finance and energy. He is also named in the current edition of Legal Media Group’s (Euromoney) Guide to the World’s Leading Project Finance Lawyers. “For a while, I had been looking for a move to better serve clients in the geographic area that makes up the bulk of my practice,” said Nash. “When you look at law firms with a presence in Abu Dhabi, V&E stands out as a leader in that market. Of course its energy reputation is preeminent, but I felt the firm’s strong presence in Asia — from where so much of the world’s economy is now driven — and deep experience in complementary practice areas such as corporate and Islamic finance made it the most compelling choice.”

In addition to Nash, V&E has also hired six new associates in Abu Dhabi and Dubai since September. Fahad Bakheet AlMalki, Owen Delaney and Ziad Saad have joined in Abu Dhabi, while Emile Boulos, William Page and Carlo Pianese are located in Dubai.

  • Fahad Bakheet AlMalki is a member of the Capital Markets practice group and is licensed to practice in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Prior to joining V&E, Fahad was resident in King & Spalding’s Riyadh office
  • Emile Boulos focuses on mergers and acquisitions, restructuring and reorganizations, and corporate finance transactions in the Middle East and Europe, with particular experience in the telecommunications sector. Emile joins V&E from the Dubai office of Herbert Smith
  • Owen Delaney joins the Energy Transactions and Projects group in Abu Dhabi from the firm’s London office, where he was previously a trainee lawyer
  • William Page advises on mergers and acquisitions, private equity, and restructuring matters, including Shari’a-compliant transactions. Prior to joining V&E, William was an associate in the Dubai office of Herbert Smith. He has also previously practiced in London and Bahrain
  • Carlo Pianese focuses on international mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and private equity transactions in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. Prior to joining V&E, Carlo was a senior associate at Allen & Overy, where he worked in London, Milan, and Dubai
  • Ziad Saad has worked extensively in all areas of international capital markets, including representing issuers and underwriters in connection with public equity and debt offerings with Rule 144A and Regulation S components. Prior to joining V&E, Ziad was a senior associate in the London and Dubai offices of Ashurst LLP

Firm Managing Partner Joseph Dilg noted that the new additions to our Dubai and Abu Dhabi offices “underscore V&E’s deep commitment to serving clients with a premier team of talented, multi-lingual lawyers with international experience dedicated to the MENA region.”
