Walkers, one of the world’s leading practitioners of global financial and transactional law, is pleased to announce new additions to its rapidly growing Singapore office.
Robert Foote is joining the firm’s Asian Insolvency & Corporate Recovery (ICR) practice and will be the first member of that group to be based in Singapore. He joins Walkers as Counsel and brings more than a decade of experience in insolvency, restructuring and commercial litigation.
In addition, Casheen van Halder is joining Walkers’ Singapore-based Funds and Corporate Team, as an Associate, where she will assist on wide range of investment funds, corporate and equity related transactions.
Prior to joining Walkers’ Singapore office, Robert served as Managing Associate at Ogier in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), where he represented corporates, creditors, equity investors, and insolvency practitioners in commercial disputes, insolvency and restructuring matters, asset tracing, trust disputes, and banking and finance litigation. Recognised by numerous legal directories as a leader and innovator in international insolvency law, Robert is a member of the BVI Bar Association, appearing regularly in the Commercial Court in the BVI and in the Court of Appeal.
Casheen comes from MacFarlanes LLP, where she advised global companies on a variety of complex transactional matters including private acquisitions and disposals, public takeovers, equity financings, joint ventures and regulatory compliance.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Robert and Casheen to our Singapore-based team,” said John Rogers, Managing Partner of Walkers’ Singapore office. “As we celebrate the fourth anniversary of our establishment in Singapore, the addition of such accomplished professionals is a testament to the unparalleled reputation and successful track record that the office has maintained over the years. Moreover, their deep experience and expertise will be an exceptional asset in helping us to better serve the needs of our diverse Asian client base.”
Robert’s is the most recent in a series of high-profile appointments intended to strengthen Walkers’ commercial disputes and ICR offering in Asia. Last August, Tim Haynes joined the firm’s Hong Kong office as Counsel, where he specialises in commercial litigation and dispute resolution.
Fraser Hern, a lead partner in the ICR group based in Hong Kong, said, “Since we opened the Insolvency and Corporate Recovery practice group in Asia in 2009 we have seen a substantial increase in demand from our Asian client base wanting real-time restructuring, insolvency and litigation expertise.
Hern added, “We have also seen a significant development in the understanding within the market of the importance of Cayman Islands and BVI law to so many ongoing multi-jurisdictional restructuring and litigation matters in the region. The expansion of our practice group into Singapore makes us unique amongst offshore law firms, and further exemplifies our commitment to the region and to providing clients with specialist and dedicated advisors in the same time zone. Robert is one of the most talented practitioners in the field, and his presence in Singapore will be a strong complement to our Hong Kong practice and our broader Asian offering.”
The hires come as Walkers moves towards its fifth year in Singapore, having established its office in February 2009. The firm’s strategic expansion—and subsequent growth–in Singapore underscores the city-state’s key role as the economic and trade hub of Southeast Asia. Walkers’ award-winning service offering in Singapore endows clients with real-time counsel on a range of British Virgin Islands (BVI) and Cayman Islands legal issues, with a core focus on funds, finance trusts, insolvency, restructuring and litigation.
