Addleshaw Goddard Targets Growth in East Asia Through New Litigation and Corporate Capability

Addleshaw Goddard has today announced plans to increase its capability in Hong Kong through a formal association with a newly established local firm which is to be led by Nigel Francis, currently Head of Litigation and Employment at Minter Ellison, and Brett Stewien, a Corporate partner who joins from DLA Piper. Nigel and Brett have practised in Hong Kong for over 25 years and 14 years respectively.

The association is subject to regulatory approval, and follows clearance in May, from the Law Society of Hong Kong, for Addleshaw Goddard to add Hong Kong to its network of overseas offices in Dubai, Oman, Qatar and Singapore.

Andrew Carpenter, International Divisional Managing Partner, said: “The association with Nigel and Brett, combined with our platform in Singapore through Jamie Harrison’s team, significantly adds to our capability in East Asia and Nigel and Brett will become full partners in Addleshaw Goddard as soon as the local regulations allow.

“Their blend of market and specialist contentious and corporate skill sets is key to us establishing a strong presence in Hong Kong, an essential financial centre from which to service clients.

“Increasing levels of business between China and the Gulf as well as the strong connections between China and Africa will also provide many opportunities for our Hong Kong team to combine with our wider network and we’re looking forward to sharing with clients the benefits of that full service, borderless capability and our in depth capabilities and experience in regions that are increasingly relevant and important to them.”

Through the combination of its offices in London, Singapore, the Gulf and Hong Kong, Addleshaw Goddard is one of a select band of law firms to have a presence in each of the key global arbitration centres most relevant to the Gulf Cooperation Council Members, India and China.

Nigel Francis is qualified in Hong Kong and England and Wales, and has been involved in major disputes cases involving Court proceedings, arbitration, mediation and regulatory tribunals, and across a range of specialist areas, including breach of contract and warranty claims, breaches of confidence and restrictive covenants, joint venture and shareholder disputes, infringements of all forms of intellectual property rights and commercial crime and fraud.

Nigel is a member of the Rules Committee of the High Court of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Law Society Civil Litigation Committee.

Brett Stewien is qualified in Hong Kong, England and Wales and Victoria, Australia. He specialises in cross-border M&A, investment and other corporate transactions, and has experience leading transactions across Asia, including Mainland China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia. Brett has led a number of ground breaking and award-winning corporate transactions in the region. He has a particular focus on helping international companies in the life sciences, mining, energy, manufacturing and retail sectors in relation to their M&A activity.
