Australia Becoming Popular Location for Expanding Law Firms

Citizens of the United States have always had a rather puzzling cultural relationship with Australia. In the 1980s and 1990s, movies like Crocodile Dundee established the continent as a place full of loveable people with distinct accents, while films like the war epic Australia introduced Americans to Australia’s checkered past. However, a new market for corporate expansion now exists between the two countries, and this is being reflected in top-level legal moves.

New mergers and acquisitions
The Australian recently reported on a merger deal between Balance Legal and Advent Lawyers. The new conglomerate is to be called AdventBalance, and by July 1 will operate from offices in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore. CEOs from both companies spoke about the incredible amount of growth they had seen over the past few years, which made the big deal possible, according to the news source.

A fifth office is opening in Brisbane by the end of the year, so if you are seeking legal recruitment from an Australian firm, AdventBalance is the company to target.

U.S. law firms expanding to the continent
Additionally, law firms from the United States are considering expanding operations into the Australian arena. Legalweek.com reported Hogan Lovells and K&L Gates intentions to expand into the Asia/Pacific market. Representatives from both firms are currently rumored to be in discussions with Australian firms.

“We have been expanding our Southeast Asian offering as part of our plans for growth in the Asia region and in that context have been closely monitoring the recent activity in the Australian market,” said managing partner Crispin Rapinet, according to the news source. “In this respect, we have had informal meetings with a number of top Australian firms to help shape our view.”
