International law firm Clyde & Co LLP and Singapore law firm Clasis LLC today announced the formation of a new Singapore-based joint law venture. The new venture will operate in Singapore as Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore from 1 August.

Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore will provide seamless offshore and onshore advice, in permitted areas – this excludes litigation in the Singapore courts which Clasis LLC will cover as a Singapore law firm.

Clyde & Co has been in Singapore since 1991. The expansion plan in Singapore has been a strategic priority for the firm, as Singapore becomes one of the world’s leading financial centres and a regional hub for insurance, maritime and trade and commodities.

Clyde & Co’s Singapore office Managing Partner Brian Nash said: “Building on from our previous preferred referral relationship, we are delighted to be joining forces with Clasis LLC in Singapore in establishing this joint law venture. Clyde & Co and Clasis LLC have regularly worked together as co-counsel, with Clasis LLC providing Singapore law advice on international transactions coordinated by Clyde & Co. From an internal perspective it will be very much business as normal as we are already familiar with the Clasis team, but from a client facing perspective we are obviously very pleased to be able to combine our strengths and offer a “one-stop shop” service under one umbrella entity. This development is another step towards expanding our platform in the region and I am looking forward to further developing our firm’s capabilities on the ground and across Southeast Asia.”

Clasis LLC’s Managing Director Steven Lim said: “Singapore legal practice has transformed significantly and is much more international now than it was a decade ago. A greater percentage of work undertaken by Singapore firms has an international element. More international firms are practicing in Singapore. Singapore has become an important venue for the resolution of international commercial disputes. Singapore law is gaining acceptance as a neutral law for international transactions. The joint law venture gives us the platform to meet the needs and challenges of the new paradigm. The JLV gives the combined firms a stronger platform to service existing clients, win new clients, and attract new recruits in Singapore.”

Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore will be an intrinsic part of Clyde & Co’s Asia Pacific network, and will increasingly act as a regional hub for offices in Sydney, Perth, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing. The joint law venture will have a total staff of 61 including 10 partners and 22 other legal professionals.
