Jackson McDonald announces new CEO Malcolm Shelton-Agar

Following an exhaustive national and international recruitment process, Western Australia’s leading independent law firm Jackson McDonald, has today announced the appointment of Malcolm Shelton-Agar as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Chairman of Partners, Richard Sandover, said the firm’s inaugural CEO, John McLean, would hand over the reins of the 90-year-old firm this month.

Mr Sandover said, “We are very fortunate to have had John’s guidance over the past 14 years. He has brought rigour to our strategic planning processes and  passion to its implementation. We have had clarity about our market and our position in it, which has been critical to our success. The firm is well placed to continue to leverage off growth opportunities in this state and in the region and Malcolm’s extensive legal management experience, both national and regional, is perfectly suited to the role.”

Mr Shelton-Agar has gained extensive management expertise in Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. He comes to Jackson McDonald from Singapore law firm Allen & Gledhill, where he was COO. Prior to this he spent over a decade as Managing Partner and then Managing Director of DLA Phillips Fox.

Mr Shelton-Agar said he was attracted to Jackson McDonald because of the firm’s outstanding reputation saying “It is very people orientated and client centric”.  He added that he was particularly attracted by the firm’s decision to remain independent which he sees as a strength in that it allows the firm to act rapidly and sensitively to changes in the WA economy and legal services market”.

“The firm is highly regarded in Australia, I am really excited about where Jackson McDonald is positioned and feel my experience in independent and global firms and expertise gained in a variety of senior management roles will enable me to make a significant contribution to the firm. I particularly look forward to hearing from our clients about the challenges they face and their expectations of us in this rapidly changing environment.”  Mr Shelton-Agar said.

John McLean who has been CEO at Jackson McDonald for the last 14 years said “our decision to remain independent and WA focussed has allowed our energies to be directed at developing our people, expanding in particular sectors and focussing on the expectations of our clients. Our growth over this period speaks volumes for the success of that strategy. Importantly, we have given the market a much clearer picture of who we are and our areas of expertise”

“I have seen significant change, not just at the firm, but within the whole profession. More than 16 firms entered Western Australia in the past three years, under this intense competition we have thrived,” Mr McLean said.

“Under John’s leadership Jackson McDonald has continued to grow, cementing its presence as a leading firm that supports the growth of WA industries. John leaves a strong platform for Malcolm to build on,” Mr Sandover said.
