Ashurst Appointed to $1.6bn NSW Light Rail Project

Ashurst has been appointed legal adviser to the NSW Government on the procurement and property aspects of the $1.6 billion Sydney CBD and South East Light Rail project.

Ashurst partners Gareth Sage and Lee McDonald, who is on secondment from Ashurst LLP, will lead the procurement work for the project and partners Chris Mitchell and Melinda Harris will lead on property acquisition and other property related matters.

Ashurst Australia Managing Partner John Carrington said: “These very significant appointments demonstrate, not only Ashurst’s strong Australian domestic light rail credentials, but also Lee McDonald’s international expertise in this particular area of infrastructure.

“The appointment demonstrates how well the global Ashurst team is working together in order to win significant mandates and deliver the highest quality advice and service to our clients.”

Work on the light rail project is expected to commence in 2014 and take five to six years to complete. The 12kms of new light rail lines will extend from Circular Quay, along George Street to Central Station and then to Kingsford via Anzac Parade and Randwick via Allison Road.

It is envisaged that the Ashurst team on this project will draw on expertise from rail, finance, infrastructure, environment and property practice areas.

Ashurst partner Gareth Sage said: “Our team is looking forward to working with the NSW Government on this exciting project.  We will draw on our wide domestic and international experience in delivering complex infrastructure projects to ensure that the NSW Government receives the best advice in delivering this project.”
