Hunton & Williams (Thailand) Limited advises Sonnedix BV

Hunton & Williams (Thailand) Limited recently acted as special counsel to Sonnedix BV in connection with its ground-mounted solar photovoltaic projects in Thailand, including an 9.5MWp (AC) installation in Chiang Rai, a 7.5MWp (AC) installation in Nakhon Ratchasima, and a 3.5MWp (AC) installation in Minburi. Firm lawyers advised Sonnedix BV on land, permits, power purchase and regulatory matters, including negotiations with Thailand’s Energy Regulatory Commission and the Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand. Sonnedix BV develops and operates solar power plants globally.

“Thailand is turning to solar farms to reduce both its greenhouse gas emissions and its reliance on natural gas. Sonnedix plays a significant role in solar power generation globally and we are proud to support them,” says Edward B. Koehler, who led the Hunton & Williams legal team and has served as counsel in respect of more than 16,000 MW of generating capacity and US$6.5 billion in capital markets, commercial, leveraged and structured financings.

The Nakhon Ratchasima Solar Farm will be the first of the three projects to come online and will be capable of supplying enough electricity to meet the annual needs of about 5,100 average Thai homes. It is expected that during each full year of operation this installation will generate more than 10,500 megawatt hours of electricity, offsetting carbon dioxide emissions by more than 6,500 tons. The Chiang Rai Solar Farm is expected to reach commercial operations later and the Minburi project is currently in the development stage.

Hunton & Williams’ energy and infrastructure practice has more than 150 lawyers in 19 offices around the world dedicated full-time to advising clients on a broad range of energy and infrastructure matters, including project development and acquisition financing, regulatory and environmental issues, corporate transactions and financial restructuring. In addition to Mr. Koehler, the team included Sahachai Wibuloutai and Pongphon Prasartmongkhon.
