King & Spalding Advises UEMedical on AED $440M Contract to Build Danat Al Emarat Women & Children’s Hospital

King & Spalding advised United Eastern Medical Services (UEMedical), a leading Abu Dhabi-based healthcare development and investment company, on its agreement with TERNA S.A. for the construction of the Danat Al Emarat Women & Children’s Hospital in Abu Dhabi. The value of the contract is AED 440 million (US $120 million).

Danat Al Emarat Hospital is UEMedical’s flagship project and is part of an integrated healthcare delivery system that includes a network of 20 premium outpatient centers located throughout Abu Dhabi. Located in the new Abu Dhabi Gate City, the 250-bed hospital will provide critically needed maternity and neonatology services in the capital. Phase one of the project consists of approximately 70,000 square meters spread across 11 floors and 2 basement levels. The second and final phase of the project is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2012.

“We are very pleased to have worked with UEMedical on this high profile project,” said Jawad I. Ali, Managing Partner of King & Spalding’s Middle East offices. “We were able to achieve this success for our client through the combination of the firm’s extensive experience in the Middle East region and in the healthcare and construction industries.”

King & Spalding was one of the first full-service law firms in the world to establish a practice devoted to construction law. Today, the group comprises more than 80 lawyers who advise some of the world’s leading companies in all aspects of the project life-cycle. The team has drafted and negotiated thousands of construction-related agreements, using virtually every form of project delivery system, for major projects around the world, ranging from US$10 million to over US$9 billion in value.

King & Spalding construction partner Tim Burbury, who is based in Abu Dhabi, advised UEMedical.

“Danat Al Emarat will be a world class facility,” said Burbury. “We are pleased to have supported UEMedical’s team in this deal and on their other healthcare projects. We congratulate Mohammed Ali Al Shorafa and his team on their achievement.”
