BLP announces hire of Bob Charlton following growth in Asia

International law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has announced today the appointment of Bob Charlton as Head of Asia and Managing Partner of its Hong Kong office.

Bob joins BLP from DLA Piper where he was Managing Partner of the Asia Pacific region and will be based in the firm’s Hong Kong office. Bob will join BLP from October 2014 and will spend a few months in London before moving out to Hong Kong in January 2015 to take up his Asia roles.

Having worked in Amsterdam, Brunei, Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Tokyo during his career, Bob brings a wealth of international experience to BLP and will help the firm to facilitate growth opportunities in Asia. He will also focus on integrating and developing BLP’s business internationally. Bob is a finance specialist with particular expertise in international banking, asset finance and infrastructure projects, and his extensive work with financial institutions will be valuable to the firm and clients alike.

BLP has three Asia offices – Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore – and this latest development reiterates the significance of the region as an area of focus and growth. International work accounted for 40% of BLP’s total revenue in FY2013/14 with the Asian offices experiencing growth of 50% over the same period. This hire follows the recent news that Construction Disputes Partner, David Robertson, and Real Estate Partner, Robert Bindless, relocated to the Singapore office to extend their respective practice areas’ activity in the region.

Commenting on Bob Charlton’s appointment, Neville Eisenberg, Managing Partner of BLP, said: “Our Asian business has grown significantly over a relatively short period of time. We have invested in emerging markets such as Myanmar and Indonesia and have increasing assignments involving clients in China, Japan and Korea. Bob’s appointment underpins the growing importance of the Asia region for the firm, and our commitment to expanding our business there.”

Bob Charlton added: “BLP’s international growth over the last few years, into countries across Asia, Russia, the Middle East and Europe, has been very significant and I am very pleased to be on board. Having worked in many countries around the world, the opportunity to enhance BLP’s Asia offering is an extremely appealing one with the firm fully supportive of the plans I hope to implement.”
