BLP boosts International Arbitration practice in Hong Kong with significant team hire

International law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has today (20 March 2015) announced the significant lateral hire of a team of nine lawyers in Hong Kong from Haley & Co, an independent, boutique law firm specialising in major projects, construction and arbitration. Three partners, Glenn Haley, Ilan Freiman and Geoff Shaw will move to BLP on 4 May 2015.

These lateral hires increase the breadth of experience for clients and support BLP’s Asia strategy. The firm will now have its first arbitration capability in Hong Kong adding to its existing arbitration capabilities in London, Moscow, Singapore and UAE.

Joining Haley, Freiman and Shaw in the move will be four associates, Patrick Daley, Mike Docherty, Sheona Campbell and Kenny Tam, plus one locum, one trainee and one paralegal, as well as up to five business services staff.

Glenn will operate within BLP’s global Litigation and Dispute Resolution (LDR) practice group, headed by Global Head of LDR, Jonathan Sacher. He will work closely with BLP’s recently appointed Head of Asia, Bob Charlton. Glenn has more than 25 years’ experience in handling and successfully resolving numerous dispute resolution processes (including litigation, arbitration, adjudication and mediation) and has worked in all aspects of major projects, infrastructure and the construction and engineering sectors, both in contentious and non-contentious matters. He is considered one of Hong Kong’s pre-eminent practitioners in this field.

Ilan will work within the firms’ global Real Estate practice group, headed by Global Head of Real Estate, Chris de Pury, and again closely with Bob Charlton. He is an experienced transactional projects and construction lawyer who advises on a wide variety of major infrastructure and real estate development projects around Asia, with particular expertise in the entertainment, leisure and hospitality industries.

BLP’s Hong Kong office opened in October 2011 and along with its Beijing office, will now have 31 lawyers, including 11 partners. In addition to Litigation and Dispute Resolution, the firm’s main practices in the region are in three key areas; Corporate, Real Estate and Asset and Shipping Finance/Finance.

Bob Charlton commented: “Haley & Co has a great heritage in both arbitration and real estate and infrastructure work and the lateral hire of the team helps us develop a key part of our strategy in Asia. Firstly, we want to build a sizeable international arbitration practice in Hong Kong and the wider region. Bringing in Glenn and his practice will help us deliver this, and with our Singapore and UAE offices, we will be able to offer clients a truly pan-Asian LDR capability.

“Secondly, we want to grow our international real estate and infrastructure capabilities. Ilan’s practice group helps us to do just this and is highly regarded as one of the largest and leading construction/projects practices in Hong Kong. We welcome all of our new team into BLP as we look to create a powerful international arbitration and real estate offering in the region.”
