DLA Piper Boosts Brisbane Office with Two Partner Hires, Legal Support Team and Three New Special Counsel

DLA Piper is pleased to announce the appointment of two new lateral partners and their legal teams in Brisbane, in addition to recent special counsel hires, demonstrating the firm’s commitment to re-establishing a strong multi-disciplinary practice in this important market.

Jim Holding and David Richardson, both from Dibbs Barker in Brisbane, will be joining the Corporate and Intellectual Property & Technology teams, respectively. Joining with them will be a number of talented lawyers, including a special counsel, Peter Burden.

These appointments come just weeks after Mark Baker-Jones joined the firm as special counsel for the planning and environment team and Stephen Ross joined the firm as special counsel for the Finance & Projects team, both in the Brisbane office.

Jim Holding is experienced in corporate advisory, focusing on major infrastructure, mining, energy and resources, and corporate and commercial (incorporating technology and telecommunications) matters. He has extensive experience working with government and corporate clients on high level infrastructure and procurement matters across a variety of industries.

Included in Jim Holding’s team is special counsel, Peter Burden. Peter has over 30 years expertise in tax law and corporate structuring.

David Richardson is a well regarded specialist in intellectual property and technology related legal matters, with experience advising on all areas of IP and IT law including technology development, IP protection and exploitation, research collaboration, e-commerce, joint ventures, licensing, distribution arrangements, franchising and other commercial procurement and supply arrangements. David also spent several years as senior in-house counsel for large corporate organisations including BBC Technology in London.

Mark Baker-Jones has extensive experience in all aspects of planning and environment law, including water, vegetation and sustainability. He has also practised in all aspects of associated law, including compulsory acquisition of land, valuation, land access and native title law.

Stephen Ross has extensive experience in corporate and commercial transactions, telecommunications infrastructure projects, software and technology arrangements and intellectual property across a wide range of industries.

Tony Holland, Managing Partner of DLA Piper in Australia, said: “These latest senior hires represent an important step in our plans to grow our Brisbane practice. It demonstrates our commitment to continuing to provide experienced legal support to leading local and international clients from each of our five offices in Australia and eleven offices in Asia Pacific.”

“Our two new partners and new special counsel will enhance our capabilities in Brisbane as well as contribute to our Corporate, Intellectual Property & Technology, Real Estate and Finance & Projects practices nationally. In Brisbane they will work closely with Office Managing Partner Paul Baxter and the Brisbane partners, supported by our experienced local team.”
