Kirkland & Ellis Strengthens Asia Corporate Practice with Hire of Gary Li

Kirkland & Ellis is pleased to announce that transactional lawyer Gary Li will join the Firm as a partner in the Hong Kong office.

“Gary is a top-of-market private equity lawyer in Greater China and we are pleased to welcome him to the Firm. His hiring is a continuation of our investment in Asia and our focus on getting deeper and broader in each of the markets in which we operate,” said Jeffrey C. Hammes, Chairman of Kirkland’s Global Management Executive Committee.

Mr. Li focuses his practice on M&A and private equity transactions involving businesses in Asia. He has significant experience with leveraged buyouts, take-private transactions, PIPEs and growth equity investments. He joins Kirkland from the Hong Kong office of Ropes & Gray, where he was a partner.

“Gary brings his considerable Greater China private equity experience to our platform and his joining us represents another major step in the pursuit of our Greater China strategy of focusing on high-value and high-profile transactions,” said David Zhang, corporate partner in the Hong Kong office.

“We are delighted that Gary has chosen to join our Hong Kong office as we continue to strengthen our platform in Asia,” added Nicholas Norris, corporate partner in Kirkland’s Hong Kong office. “Gary is an exceptional addition to our expanding private equity and corporate practice in the region.”

Mr. Li joins Kirkland a month after restructuring attorneys Neil McDonald and Damien Coles joined the Firm’s Hong Kong office as partners. Read about Mr. McDonald here and Mr. Coles here.

Mr. Li has worked on some of the most challenging transactions in the region over the last few years representing top tier investment funds. Recent work includes: advising Blackstone as the lead investor in a consortium in the US$625 million going-private transaction of China-based Pactera Technology International Ltd.; advising China Everbright as a member of the buyer consortium in the US$3.7 billion going-private of Focus Media Holdings; and advising TPG Capital on its US$100 million investment in Xinyuan Real Estate Co., Ltd., a Beijing-based real estate developer.

Mr. Li holds a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a B.A. from Peking University Law School.

Subject to regulatory approval, Mr. Li will join the Hong Kong office this fall.
