Norton Rose announces a new Of Counsel in Singapore

Norton Rose (Asia) LLP, the international legal practice, today announced that Nicola Davies in the Singapore banking team has been promoted from senior associate to Of Counsel. Nicola specialises in energy and infrastructure projects, primarily in the international project finance market.

She joined the Singapore office in January 2007 from the London Office, where her background included advising on construction and operational aspects of both international and domestic projects. Since joining the office in Singapore her infrastructure work has included advising governments, banks and sponsors on Public Private Partnerships (PPP), notably in the education, defence and water sectors. Nicola’s extensive energy experience includes advising clients on IPP and IWPP projects in the Middle East and Asia where her focus has been the negotiation of power purchase agreements, EPC contracts, O&M agreements, long term turbine supply agreements and related project documentation.

Nicola Davies commented;

“I have been fortunate to be involved in broad range of both energy and infrastructure projects all over the world acting for a diverse range of clients from developers to procuring authorities and commercial lenders to secondary market investors. Whether it has been the recent SportsHub deal in Singapore, a social housing project in the UK or advising a Japanese trading house on an IPP project in the Middle East I have had the privilege of working on some terrific deals alongside a number of very talented and experienced individuals from whom I have learnt a great deal.”

Nick Merritt, a partner in the Singapore office specialising in energy and infrastructure, commented;

“This promotion to Of Counsel is recognition of Nicola’s expertise and hard work. Clients value the depth of her technical knowledge and her ability to draw on her experience to devise innovative solutions.”

Nicola Davies and Nick Merritt together with Jeff Smith led the team that recently advised Singapore SportsHub Consortium on the financial close of the largest sports facilities infrastructure PPP project in the world. Financial close was reached on 25 August 2010 and the project is due for completion in April 2014. Infrastructure Journal recently reported, “The closing of the Singapore SportsHub project is arguably one of the most remarkable success stories in the project finance arena in a decade.” (1st September 2010)

The Asia banking team now consists of 18 partners, 3 Of Counsels and a total of 67 lawyers with 8 banking partners and 26 lawyers based in Singapore.

The legal directory Chambers Asia 2010 recently wrote about the Singapore projects and energy practice,

“With a team this size, the firm is able to offer dedicated partners for each area, with specialists on hand to manage oil and gas, LNG, project finance, coal and power development projects and energy transportation.”
