Norton Rose strengthens oil and gas practice in Asia Pacific

Norton Rose Australia, the international legal practice, has announced that Alex Cull, a recognised and leading oil and gas expert in the Asia Pacific region, is relocating from Singapore to Norton Rose Australia as a partner based in Perth.

Representing governments, developers, operators, contractors and lenders across the complete oil and gas supply chain, Alex has particular expertise in upstream operations, asset and company acquisitions and sales, trading, and commercialising gas. He has advised on a large number of natural gas pipeline and LNG projects throughout Asia Pacific and further afield and has worked in the region for over 12 years having been based in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.

Alex Cull, Norton Rose Australia oil and gas partner commented:

“Australia is one of only a handful of global hot spots being targeted for inward investment, especially from energy hungry North Asia clients. In addition to the conventional offshore projects, and booming coal seam gas, we are seeing shale and underground coal gasification projects emerge. Australia is also a pioneer in projects involving floating liquefied natural gas. It’s an exciting time for the industry.”

Vincent Dwyer, Head of Energy, Norton Rose Australia commented:

“His move together with Ashley Wright joining the Singapore office is a significant part of our strategy for the continued growth of our energy team in Asia Pacific. It will support the broader regional expansion and provide further strength to our energy team in Australia.”

Simon Currie, Global head of Energy, Norton Rose LLP commented:

“Alex’s move is the type of client-led initiative which we anticipated would follow after we announced Norton Rose Australia joining Norton Rose group. He will further enhance the significant advantage we have over our competitors in terms of energy experience and expertise in Asia Pacific. His move reflects our ability to re-locate partners wherever the clients demand our expertise and wherever in the world the business opportunities lie.”

Recognised as a leading oil & gas lawyer in client surveys and legal directories, Alex was recently cited by Chambers Asia 2011 as, “a fantastic lawyer who is renowned for his experience in oil and gas projects. He has been involved in some significant deals of late.” Alex is also a member of a number of industry groups, such as the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators and AMPLA.

Last December, Norton Rose (Asia) LLP announced the appointment of Ashley Wright as a partner to lead the oil and gas team in Asia Pacific from Singapore. Of Ashley, Chambers Asia 2011 says, “With a decade of experience in Asia, Ashley Wright is noted for his oil and gas work”.
