Japan Business Group Launches in Germany

International law firm Simmons & Simmons is strengthening its relationship with businesses in Japan with the launch of its Japan Business Group in Düsseldorf on 1 November. The firm’s Japan Business Group already operates elsewhere in its network and is particularly active in its London office.

It is aimed to meet the specific needs of Japanese clients, and clients with strong business relationships in the Japanese market. The Group builds upon the firm’s strong association with Japan, and is made up of experienced lawyers who have strong links to Japan, such as working or living in Japan.

The Group in Düsseldorf will be led by newly appointed, German qualified lawyer Shinjii Niioka. Shinjii was previously Japan Legal Counsel in Tokyo with GlaxoSmithKline and prior to that, he was Asia Legal Counsel – Chief Compliance Officer for General Electric Capital Real Estate, also based in Tokyo.

The Group’s launch is recognition of the importance that Germany is playing in the economic relations between Japan and Europe. The greater Düsseldorf region alone is home to over 500 subsidiaries of Japanese companies, in many cases with German or European headquarters. Düsseldorf is home to Europe’s third largest Japanese community.

Jason Daniel, head of the Japan Business Group and Simmons & Simmons’ office in Tokyo, says: ‘‘The new Düsseldorf Group is a major step forward for our Japan Business Group, and with Shinji’s appointment, we have gained an extremely experienced lawyer.’’

Dr Hans-Hermann Aldenhoff, Germany country head, added: ‘‘Shinji is an excellent lawyer, who is not only familiar with Japanese and German culture, but also with both legal systems. His expertise will allow us to provide an even better service to our clients.’’
