Mallesons Acts on Breakthrough Agribusiness Deal

Mallesons Stephen Jaques, a leading law firm in the Asian region, has acted for HRZ Wheats Pty Ltd on a significant deal enabling the continued investment in the creation of unique germplasm targeting the high rainfall zone of Australia, following an equity investment into the company by Dow AgroSciences Australia Ltd.

HRZ Wheat’s other shareholders are CSIRO, the Grains Research and Development Corporation, Landmark Operations Limited and New Zealand Plant & Food Research.

The investment by Dow AgroSciences, one of Australia’s leading agricultural chemical and pest control companies that also has a strong emphasis on agricultural crops, will enable HRZ Wheats to continue to develop milling quality, disease resistant wheat varieties with a high rate of return for the nation’s growers, overcoming the challenges presented by the high rainfall zone. The deal will ensure leading technologies and new germplasm for research and breeding will be made available to HRZ Wheats. Landmark (through Seednet and partners) will be responsible for the seed production and commercialisation of commodity wheat varieties within Australia.

The Mallesons team was led by Partner Adam Bartlett and supported by Senior Associate Annabel Griffin.

Partner Adam Bartlett, said: “This collaboration is a great outcome for all parties, with the additional investment allowing HRZ to expand their research efforts and deliver a superior product to growers with the added input of Dow AgroSciences’ knowledge and tools.”

The investment into HRZ Wheats will be welcomed by both breeders and growers within the wheat industry globally.  Australian growers can expect to see new and superior wheat varieties produced by HRZ Wheat’s breeding programs.
