Squire Sanders Hires Senior Energy Lawyer

Squire Sanders has announced the appointment of senior corporate and energy lawyer Clare Pope. Ms. Pope, who joins the firm as Of Counsel, was previously at Herbert Smith Freehills in London, Tokyo, and Singapore, and also spent time on secondment to the upstream exploration and access team at British multinational oil and gas company, BP plc, principally focused on its Uruguay access.

Ms. Pope is an experienced, dual-qualified English and Western Australian corporate lawyer, with considerable transactional and advisory experience in the oil and gas and hard rock mining sectors, and has advised clients on their activities in a number of jurisdictions worldwide including South East Asia, Africa, South America, Eastern Europe, Russia and Kazakhstan.

Commenting on her appointment, Duncan Maclean, energy & resources partner in Perth and co-chair of Squire Sanders’ Global Energy & Natural Resources Group, said: “Clare is very well-known to us, having worked as a member of our team in Perth for a number of years before moving to London. Clare has a long and successful track record working in the energy industry and over the past few years, she has been involved in some of the sector’s most significant transactions, making her a fantastic strategic fit for the firm.”

John Poulsen, Squire Sanders’ managing partner in Australia, said: “We are excited to welcome Clare back to the firm. Her first-rate international experience, and depth of knowledge of the energy and natural resources sector, will add real dimension to the services we provide to clients in this field, not only in Australia but across the world.”

Clare Pope’s appointment is in addition to a number of senior lawyers who have joined Squire Sanders in Australia this year, including partner Tom Lennox and a team of financial services lawyers, who joined the firm’s office in Sydney in September; construction partner Avendra Singh; corporate and technology partner Richard Horton; construction and projects of counsel, Fabio Fior, and Josh Clarke, of counsel in project finance.
